Doge Meme: Origin, Meaning and How to Use It
In one line: A Shiba Inu giving the camera a side-eye, surrounded by deliberately broken-English captions like "such wow" — a format for amused, slightly bewildered commentary.
Where the Doge meme comes from
Doge traces to a 2010 photo of a rescued Shiba Inu named Kabosu in Japan. In 2013 the photo was combined with captions in broken English (two-word modifiers like "such", "much" and "very" used incorrectly on purpose) and spread across Tumblr and Reddit, later lending its name to a joke cryptocurrency that outgrew the joke.
How to use it correctly
- Write captions in the broken pattern: short fragments, wrong grammar, no full sentences.
- Use it for light, self-aware reactions rather than sharp criticism.
- The side-eye expression does most of the work — keep captions sparse.
Example captions
- “such deadline. much panic. wow.”
- “very monday. such coffee. amaze.”
Common mistakes
- Writing normal, correct sentences — that breaks the format's voice.
- Overloading the image with long captions; classic Doge uses a handful of fragments.
