Frequently Asked Questions
What is MemeOrigins?
A free reference site explaining the origin, meaning and correct usage of classic meme templates in plain English.
Are the explainers free?
Yes, all of them, with no sign-up. A Pro tier for extras is planned at $9/mo and is not billed today.
Where do the origin stories come from?
Each explainer is written fresh from widely reported, common-knowledge accounts of how the format spread. Where the record is fuzzy, the text hedges ("spread in the late 2010s") rather than inventing precise dates.
Why emoji instead of the real meme images?
The original photographs belong to their creators. Emoji act as visual stand-ins while the words carry the explanation.
Can I suggest a template to explain?
Yes — reach out via the contact page with the template name and where you saw it used.
Can I quote an explainer?
Yes. Each page opens with a one-line meaning written for quoting; please link back to the explainer.
