Surprised Pikachu Meme: Origin, Meaning and How to Use It
In one line: A character does something with an entirely predictable outcome, then acts shocked when exactly that outcome happens.
Where the Surprised Pikachu meme comes from
The format uses a still of Pikachu, from the long-running Pokémon animated series, wearing a wide-eyed shocked expression. It spread in 2018 as a three-step story: do the thing, the obvious result happens, insert shocked face.
How to use it correctly
- Structure the caption as cause, predictable effect, then the shocked reaction.
- The outcome must be obvious to everyone except the person in the meme.
- Works best for self-owns: your own predictable mistakes.
Example captions
- “Leave the assignment to the last day. Have no time to finish it. Surprised Pikachu.”
- “Ignore the low-fuel warning. Run out of fuel. Surprised Pikachu.”
Common mistakes
- Choosing an outcome nobody could have predicted — the predictability is the joke.
- Skipping the setup; without step one and two the face means nothing.
